Six Decades of Jasper Johns at the Broad

Jasper Johns: Something Resembling Truth opens February 10 at the Broad museum in Los Angeles, and we are delighted to recommend the exquisitely produced, 262-page, linen-bound exhibition catalog, complete with tipped-on front and back cover panels.

Six Decades of Jasper Johns at the Broad

A collaboration with the Royal Academy in London, this blockbuster exhibition features more than 120 of the artist’s most iconic and significant paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings, many never before exhibited in Los Angeles. The exhibition catalog features writing by Roberta Bernstein, Edith Devaney, Hiroko Ikegami, Morgan Meis and Robert Storr.

Six Decades of Jasper Johns at the Broad

With loans from international public and private collections, including significant works from the Broad collection, the exhibition and its catalog trace the evolution of the artist’s six-decade career through a series of thematic chapters.

They encompass the full range of Johns’ materials, motifs and techniques—including his unique use of encaustic (heated beeswax) and found-material collage in paintings—and the innovations he has achieved in sculpture and the graphic arts by expanding the possibilities of traditional media.

In a departure from the usual retrospective approach, Johns’ artistic achievements are illuminated through the juxtaposition of early and late works throughout.

One hopes for something resembling truth, some sense of life, even of grace, to flicker, at least, in the work. - Jasper Johns, 2006
