AUTOPHOTO and the old-fashioned idea of freedom

This late-1960s photograph from William Eggleston’s Los Alamos series is just one of 600 impeccably curated images of cars from the last century to the present collected in the summer blockbuster, Autophoto: Cars & Photography, 1900 to Now. A summer pick everywhere from the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times to CNN and Popular Mechanics, this luxe collection features work by anonymous contributors alongside greats like Robert Doisneau, Elliott Erwitt, Anthony Hernandez, Catherine Opie, Martin Parr, Hans-Christian Schink and Henry Wessel, to name but a few. “As a basically old-fashioned-machine,” J.G. Ballard is quoted, the car “enshrines a basically old-fashioned idea: freedom.”
