|   |   | Damien Hirst: Cherry BlossomsText by Emanuele Coccia, Gilda Williams, Michio Hayashi, Philippe Costamagna. Anthology by Alberto Manguel.
Incandescent and celebratory paintings of cherry blossoms from Damien Hirst, in a glorious oversize volume with 18 gatefold spreadsWith 107 new works, Cherry Blossoms marks a new chapter in Damien Hirst’s career-long exploration of the physical relationship between artist and canvas that began with his Spot Paintings in 1986. Hirst describes his cherry blossoms as "garish and messy and fragile”; the series signals a shift in Hirst’s career away from minimalism and “the imagined mechanical painter” toward a painting that delights in the potential haphazardness of the medium, as well as the artist’s own fallibility as a creator. Rich in color and striking in number, Hirst’s Cherry Blossoms are both an appropriation and a tribute to the pictorial art of the 19th and 20th centuries.Damien Hirst (born 1965) rose to prominence in the 1990s as one of the Young British Artists, garnering attention for his controversial site-specific pieces. A 1989 graduate of Goldsmiths College, Hirst was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995. Now one of the contemporary art world’s most famous figures, Hirst continues to surprise audiences with a staggering diversity of work, ranging from sculpture and painting to installation and performance art. In 2012, a retrospective of his nearly 30-year career was staged at Tate Modern. Hirst is represented by Gagosian.
PRAISE AND REVIEWSFinancial Times Beatrice Hodgkin The show’s catalogue raisonné is a monumental display of the Fondation’s commitment to the show and its belief in Hirst the painter – full-colour versions of all 107 pieces feature alongside a cherry-blossom cultural anthology and four essays by critics from around the world, hitherto unconnected to Hirst, who set it within a cultural, botanic, and poetic context. | | FROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 4/17/2022Featured spreads are from Damien Hirst: Cherry Blossoms, a book that is gorgeous and compelling on its own, but especially inspiring this week, as cherry trees come to life up and down the east coast. “Branches sprawl and spread all around, as if to entirely cover the surface of the painting, down to the smallest bit of space,” Emanuele Coccia writes. “A metamorphosis of sorts has modified their original purpose. No longer do they trace the modular architecture enabling a fair and balanced distribution of foliage, flowers and fruit. The brown lines now crisscross the canvas like the bones and sinews of some flying beast, magnetizing the most motley shapes and hues so as to aggregate, couple, support and prevent them from falling, from disappearing into the sky, into the background. Damien Hirst’s Cherry Blossoms series reads as an alternative treatise on botany: brought into the artist’s pictorial realm, Prunus serrulate—the cherry tree species from Asia that many actually worship, its blossoming prompting an array of social rites—seems to take on a novel shape and lead a different life, its silhouette still shooting up but as if altered. Such a metamorphosis, however, does not result from an arbitrary decision. It follows the rigorous and logical approach that Damien Hirst has fostered in his work since the beginning, while also taking into account the demands living beings impose on the world and its very matter whenever they need to transform these into simple images.” continue to blog | | | HENI PublishingISBN: 9781912122752 USD $95.00 | CAD $140Pub Date: 11/12/2024 Active | In stock
