Damien Hirst: Pharmacy LondonDamien Hirst: Pharmacy London

Published by Steidl.

In 2005 Damien Hirst (born 1965) began photographing every pharmacy in the Greater London area. Shooting both the individual pharmacists behind their counters and the exterior views of the city's 1,856 chemists, he took over a decade to complete the project. The images are brought together in their entirety in this extraordinary ten-volume artist's book. Hirst's career-long obsession with the minimalist aesthetics employed by pharmaceutical companies—the cool colors and simple geometric forms—first manifested in his series of Medicine Cabinets, conceived in 1988 while still at Goldsmiths College. For his 1992 installation Pharmacy, Hirst recreated an entire chemist within the gallery space, stating: "[Pharmacy] is like a contemporary museum. In a hundred years it will look like an old apothecary." Pharmacy London similarly embodies the artist's realization of an "idea of a moment in time." Limited edition of 750.

Damien Hirst: Colour SpaceDamien Hirst: Colour Space

The Complete Works

Published by Heni Publishing.
Introduction by Ann Gallagher.

The series of recent Colour Space paintings by Damien Hirst (born 1965) have deep roots in Hirst's practice, relating to his Spot Paintings, a series begun by the artist in 1986, during his first year as a student at Goldsmiths. Conceived in 2016, Colour Space serves as a response to the iconic Spot Painting series. Where the Spot Paintings are painstakingly rigorous in their formulaic grid structure, intended to look as if they'd been made "by a person trying to paint like a machine," the Colour Space series is looser and more painterly, featuring informal drips and splashes of paint. Both series, however, share a system—no two colors repeat within a single canvas.

The Spot Paintings were always conceived of as an ongoing project (1,365 and counting), but Colour Space is a finite series, consisting of more than 260 works painted with household gloss paint on canvas. These paintings are then subcategorized by spot size: 6 mm, 10 mm, 25 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm; with a selection executed on a black background. Each painting is fully illustrated in this publication, alongside artwork details and an introductory essay by Ann Gallagher, director of collections at Tate.

Damien Hirst: Reverence, Revelation, DevotionDamien Hirst: Reverence, Revelation, Devotion

Published by HENI Publishing.
Introduction by Jonathan Griffin.

Just as Jackson Pollock once said “I am nature,” Damien Hirst (born 1965) sets out to “use the nature in me,” tapping into both artistic expression and innate wildness. Reverence, Revelation, Devotion is a new large-format hardback publication showcasing the complete works from three new series of paintings: the Reverence Paintings, The Revelations and The Devotions. Hirst worked on several paintings at once, applying layers to the canvases simultaneously. The result is a series of gestural, abstract paintings produced through intuition and impulsiveness. The works in each series are both mechanical and naturalistic, by which Hirst explores the possibility of “a person trying to paint like a machine.” Featuring nearly 200 full-color reproductions of the 144 artworks, the book includes an essay by British writer and art critic Jonathan Griffin, in which he compares these series to the work of Agnes Martin, Louise Bourgeois and Robert Ryman.

Damien Hirst: Where the Land Meets the SeaDamien Hirst: Where the Land Meets the Sea

Published by HENI Publishing.
Text by David Campany, James Cahill.

Following the HENI exhibition Where the Land Meets the Sea (2023), this elegant and uniquely designed large-format hardback catalog features large-scale oil works from three series by British artist Damien Hirst (born 1965): Coast Paintings, Sea Paintings and Seascapes. The paintings are inspired by his childhood memories of holidays spent in British coastal destinations such as Scarborough, Filey, Whitby and Skegness, and his lifelong pastime of beach walks during UK winters. Hirst was influenced in part by Abstract Expressionism, specifically Robert Motherwell’s Beside the Sea paintings from the 1960s. With their spattered textures mimicking sprays of water, Hirst’s paintings reveal an unerring captivation with the sea and its connections with awe, inevitability and nothingness. The exhibition catalog showcases full-color reproductions of the complete works, complemented by thoughtful texts from British writer and curator David Campany and British art critic James Cahill.

Damien Hirst: Cherry Blossoms, French Edition

Published by Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain.
Text by Emanuele Coccia, Philippe Costamagna, Michio Hayashi, Gilda Williams. Anthology by Alberto Manguel.

With 107 works, Cherry Blossoms marks a new chapter in Damien Hirst’s career-long exploration of the physical relationship between artist and canvas that began with his Spot Paintings in 1986. Hirst describes his cherry blossoms as “garish and messy and fragile”; the series signals a shift in Hirst’s career away from minimalism and “the imagined mechanical painter” toward a painting that delights in the potential haphazardness of the medium, as well as the artist’s own fallibility as a creator. Using a conceptual approach, Hirst explores questions of beauty, color and excess in these paintings. Rich in color and striking in number, Hirst’s Cherry Blossoms are both an appropriation and a tribute to the pictorial art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Presented at the Fondation Cartier in Paris in 2021, Cherry Blossoms was Damien Hirst’s first museum exhibition in France.
Damien Hirst (born 1965) rose to prominence in the 1990s as one of the Young British Artists, garnering attention for his controversial site-specific pieces. A 1989 graduate of Goldsmiths College, Hirst was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995. Now one of the contemporary art world’s most famous figures, Hirst continues to surprise audiences with a staggering diversity of work, ranging from sculpture and painting to installation and performance art. In 2012, a retrospective of his 30-year career was staged at Tate Modern. Hirst is represented by Gagosian.

Damien Hirst: The CurrencyDamien Hirst: The Currency

Published by HENI Publishing.
Interview by Stephen Fry.

For the conceptual project The Currency, British artist Damien Hirst (born 1965) created 10,000 NFTs corresponding to 10,000 of his original artworks: painted with his signature enamel dots and titled with his favorite song lyrics. During a year-long period, buyers could purchase a piece for $2,000, and were then given the choice to either keep the NFT or exchange it for the physical artwork. At the end of the year, 5,149 collectors decided to keep the physical artworks, and 4,851 the NFTs. Hirst then publicly destroyed the rejected pieces by burning them in a furnace. Published on the conclusion of the series, The Currency book features 332 of the 10,000 artworks as well as installation shots of the final exhibition, prefaced with a conversation between Hirst and British actor and broadcaster Stephen Fry.

Damien Hirst: Mental EscapologyDamien Hirst: Mental Escapology

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Edited by Jason Beard.

Held in 2021 in St Moritz, Mental Escapology was Damien Hirst’s (born 1965) first major exhibition in Switzerland. It featured over 40 works from some of his best-known series—including the Spot Paintings, Natural History and Mental Escapology—presented across multiple outdoor and indoor sites. Highlights included the 12-foot bronze sculpture The Monk (2014) positioned in the center of the frozen Lake St Moritz. Elsewhere, another piece from Hirst’s Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable series, Two Figures with a Drum (2013), was installed on the southwestern edge of the lake, while his 21-foot sculpture Temple (2008) towered over the lake’s north bank. Some of Hirst’s most recognizable works were displayed in an 18th-century building and in the Protestant church in the town’s center. Designed by the exhibition’s curator, Jason Beard, this publication provides an overview of the show, presenting the works alongside a selection of quotes by Hirst.

Damien Hirst: End of a CenturyDamien Hirst: End of a Century

Published by Other Criteria Books.

The stellar ascent of Damien Hirst (born 1965) began with his enrollment at Goldsmiths College in 1986, where he quickly became one of the standout artists of his class. This retrospective focuses on the early years of Hirst’s trailblazing career, featuring his university work, his first Spot Painting and his experiments with collage.

Additionally, this volume highlights his most iconic projects, such as the staggering 1999 painted bronze sculpture Hymn and his now-infamous series of conceptual works in which taxidermied animals are suspended in vitrines of formaldehyde. A selection of quotes accompanies the illustrations and reveals the themes which have remained constant throughout the artist’s career: beauty, religion, science, life and death.

Damien Hirst: End of an EraDamien Hirst: End of an Era

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Edited by Millicent Wilner. Text by Damien Hirst, Hans Ulrich Obrist.

In 2010, Gagosian Gallery staged a seminal exhibition of Damien Hirst’s (born 1965) paintings and sculptures. Titled End of an Era, it addressed concepts of illusion and reality, myth and idolatry, and took its name from the central sculpture in the exhibition: a severed bull’s head in a gold vitrine. The work served as a sequel to Hirst’s 2008 sculpture The Golden Calf, a formaldehyde-preserved bull.

Alongside this sculpture, the exhibition showed Hirst’s Diamond Fact Paintings for the first time—a series of photorealist depictions of the world’s most illustrious jewels—as well as two Diamond Cabinets. This catalog collects these pieces and includes a catalogue raisonné of each series (Gold Tanks, Diamond Cabinets and Diamond Fact Paintings). The publication also features a conversation between Hans Ulrich Obrist and Hirst.

Damien Hirst: Galleria BorgheseDamien Hirst: Galleria Borghese

Published by Marsilio Editori.
Edited with text by Anna Coliva, Mario Codognato. Text by Geraldine Leardi.

In an extraordinary cultural undertaking, British artist Damien Hirst (born 1965) has launched an intense and unfiltered interaction with the works of Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Bernini, Canova and others in Italy’s Galleria Borghese. An unparalleled and controversial celebrity of the contemporary art world, Hirst’s work is perfectly suited to be displayed in relation to the colors and materials found in the Galleria Borghese. His sculptures, made of fine materials such as bronze, Carrara marble or seductive malachite, have been put on display in rooms of the museum that house masterpieces of the modern era such as the statuary groups of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Antonio Canova’s Paolina Borghese. The resulting effect is one of surprising harmony: the Five Grecian Nudes appear natural next to Canova’s sculpture and the primitive appearance of the Lion Women of Asit Mayor is in perfect chromatic accord with the floors of the Galleria. Hirst’s new series of Colour Space paintings offers the same sense of continuity as the flow of the works hanging in the museum’s picture gallery. This comprehensive vision of the past and the present is fostered by the proximity of antique painting and contemporary painting, without frames to separate them, and without elements of signage to interrupt this immersion.

Damien Hirst: Cherry BlossomsDamien Hirst: Cherry Blossoms

Published by Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Paris.
Text by Emanuele Coccia, Gilda Williams, Michio Hayashi, Philippe Costamagna. Anthology by Alberto Manguel.

With 107 new works, Cherry Blossoms marks a new chapter in Damien Hirst’s career-long exploration of the physical relationship between artist and canvas that began with his Spot Paintings in 1986. Hirst describes his cherry blossoms as "garish and messy and fragile”; the series signals a shift in Hirst’s career away from minimalism and “the imagined mechanical painter” toward a painting that delights in the potential haphazardness of the medium, as well as the artist’s own fallibility as a creator. Rich in color and striking in number, Hirst’s Cherry Blossoms are both an appropriation and a tribute to the pictorial art of the 19th and 20th centuries.
In 2012, a retrospective of his nearly 30-year career was staged at Tate Modern. Hirst is represented by Gagosian.

One Hundred Drawings Volume I & II: Special Edition

Published by Other Criteria Books.

These Renaissance-style drawings, complete with scrawled annotations and collection stamps, depict each of the 100 artworks "discovered" from a wrecked ship. Rendered in a range of traditional mediums, including silverpoint, charcoal, lapis lazuli pigment and gold leaf, these exquisite drawings form part of Hirst's (born 1965) most ambitious project to date, Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable, presented at the Pinault Collection's two Venetian museums—Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana—from April to December 2017. The exhibition marked the first time in the collection's history that both museums have been dedicated to a single artist.

Each volume is lavishly produced with a leather ribbed spine, tipped-in images and embossed title pages. This new special edition, published in a run of 100 copies, collects both volumes, presenting them in a white slipcase with beautiful red-and-black foiling and custom-made marbled paper interiors. Each copy is signed by Hirst.

Damien Hirst: The Complete Medicine CabinetsDamien Hirst: The Complete Medicine Cabinets

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Text by Arthur C. Danto, James Frey. Conversation with Steve Jones.

Published on the occasion of Damien Hirst's exhibition at L&M Gallery, New York, October 2010, the first ever medicine cabinets book is contextualised by the artist's following of the punk movement. The first twelve sculptures in the book are named after the title tracks on the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks album. The front page newspaper spreads punctuating the book from the album's release year (1977) and the year of the cabinets' completion (1989) provide a context for reading James Frey's story poem, Fuck This and Fuck That, which describes the listless protest of a teenage waster. The song titles and cabinet names - No Feelings, Liar and Seventeen - resound with the frustrations of Thatcherite Britain and the violence borne out in daily uprest and anarchy, as depicted in the news: IRA MEN HELD IN BIG SWOOP; RIOT SHIELDS OUT AGAIN and DOCKS JOBS-FOR-LIFE TO BE AXED BY AUTUMN. Hirst's medicine cabinets have long been described as temples of medicinal hierarchies providing nothing more than a short-term cure in the face of death. Viewing the pervasive successes and exploitations of the pharmaceutical industry as a belief system in itself is evidence of our dependency and a form of escapism. Hirst has commented: 'I've always seen medicine cabinets as bodies, but also like a cityscape or civilization, with some sort of hierarchy within it. It's also like a contemporary museum of the Middle Ages. In a hundred years' time this will look like an old apothecary. A museum of something that's around today.'The publication features a radio broadcast interview between Damien Hirst and Steve Jones, the Sex Pistols' guitarist, covering music, girls, money, drugs, drinks and smokes. Thebook's index lists every medicine cabinet ever made and the exhibition itself will include original Sex Pistols memorabilia including album sleeves and t-shirts.

Damien Hirst: Schizophreno-genesisDamien Hirst: Schizophreno-genesis

Published by Other Criteria Books/Paul Stolper.

Based on the minimal aesthetic of the medicinal pill, the Schizophrenogenesis series by Damien Hirst (born 1965) examines our almost spiritual faith in the rigors of science and the pharmaceutical industry. This volume includes all of the works from the series, including The Cure: 30 silkscreen prints, each depicting a two-color pill set against a vibrantly hued background. Also included in this volume are the corresponding sculptural works, reproductions of medicine bottles, pharmaceutical boxes, ampoules and syringes at various monstrous scales. These works continue Hirst’s exploration of contemporary belief systems, which now rank medicine alongside religion, love and art. Hirst explains: “Pills are a brilliant little form, better than any Minimalist art. They’re all designed to make you buy them … they come out of flowers, plants, things from the ground, and they make you feel good, you know, to just have a pill, to feel beauty.”

Damien Hirst: Black Scalpel CityscapesDamien Hirst: Black Scalpel Cityscapes

Limited Edition

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Edited by Jason Beard, Honey Luard. Text by Jerry Brotton, Michael Bracewell.

In 2014, Damien Hirst (born 1965) unveiled a new series of paintings made up of vast numbers of surgical instruments that combine to form bird's-eye views of cities from around the world. With the Black Scalpel Cityscapes, Hirst investigates subjects pertaining to the sometimes-disquieting realities of modern life--surveillance, urbanization, globalization and the virtual nature of conflict--as well as those relating to the human condition in general, such as our inability to arrest physical decay. Described by the artist as "portraits of living cities," the series is illustrated in full and accompanied by a comprehensive list of artwork details in this signed limited edition, which features a black zipper down the spine. The volume also includes an essay by Jerry Brotton, author of A History of the World in Twelve Maps, and a fictional short story by novelist and arts writer Michael Bracewell.

Damien Hirst: On the Way to WorkDamien Hirst: On the Way to Work

Published by Other Criteria Books.

I want it to be revealing. I'll talk about anything you like. I want it to be truthful. Let's do it. There is no off-limits. I'm afraid of nothing. Immediately recognised as a young artist with a brilliant, sordid and uncompromising imagination, Damien Hirst is the most celebrated artist Britain has produced for generations. The undisputed leader and originator of the dominant movement in contemporary art on both sides of the Atlantic, he is now so ingrained in the public consciousness that even those with only a passing interest in art are familiar with his notorious shark and pickled sheep. Gordon Burn met Hirst for the first time nine years ago. Both admirers of David Sylvester's interviews with Francis Bacon and Jan Wenner's interviews with John Lennon, there was always an unspoken understanding between them that they would do something similar when the time was right. The resulting conversations in On the Way to Work are electrifyingly candid. True to the undertaking Hirst gave Burn, there is no off-limits: here are Hirst's thoughts on celebrity, money, art, alcohol, sex, death, the North of England, class, crime and cocaine; his views on Marco Pierre White, Charles Saatchi, David Bowie, Gilbert and George and Lucian Freud. Damien Hirst's art and life came to define the nineties. Like the generation Hirst has come to represent, On the Way to Work is brave, unpredictable, scabrously funny and corrosively intelligent. It is also a how-to guide to becoming the most famous artist in the world.

Damien Hirst: For Heaven's SakeDamien Hirst: For Heaven's Sake

Published by Other Criteria Books.

For Heaven's Sake was produced for the Damien Hirst: Forgotten Promises inaugural exhibition at Gagosian Gallery, Hong Kong in 2011. The book title, named after the artwork "For Heaven's Sake" (2008), includes full-color plates of the skull, including fabrication shots and installation shots at the Hong Kong exhibition where this life-size human baby skull cast in platinum and covered in 8,128 pavé-set perfect diamonds: 7,105 natural fancy pink diamonds and 1,023 white diamonds on the fontanel was shown for the first time. Also included are 8 unique preliminary drawings by the artist. This spectacular memento mori was cast from an original skull that formed part of a nineteenth-century pathology collection that Hirst acquired some years ago. As Hirst says: "Diamonds are about perfection and clarity and wealth and sex and death and immortality. They are a symbol of everything that's eternal, but then they have a dark side as well." The book includes a short text by curator, writer and critic, Francesco Bonami published in both Chinese and English. Bonami is the Manilow Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. He is also the artistic director of the Fondazione Sandretto ReRebaudengo per l'Arte in Turin, Fondazione Pitti Discovery in Florence and the Centro di Arte Contemporanea Villa Manin. He was the director of the 50th Biennale di Venezia of Visual Arts in 2003.

Damien Hirst: In the Darkest Hour There May Be Light: Works from Damien Hirst's Murderme collectionDamien Hirst: In the Darkest Hour There May Be Light: Works from Damien Hirst's Murderme collection

Published by Other Criteria Books.

Published to accompany the exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, London in November 2006, In the darkest hour there may be light provides a revealing and concise overview of Damien Hirst's murderme collection to date. As Julia Peyton-Jones puts it in the Director's Foreword to this beautifully produced catalogue, "Damien Hirst's groundbreaking and controversial work has made him one of the world's best-known living artists. From the start of his career, Hirst adopted the role of curator, organising a series of exhibitions with a group of young artists who would come to define cutting-edge art in the 1990s." Hirst has continually bought and collected works by artists who have inspired and influenced him, such as Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol and Richard Prince, by artists from his own generation such as Sarah Lucas, Angus Fairhurst and Marcus Harvey, and by those at the early stages of their careers such as Rachel Howard, Nicholas Lumb and Tom Ormond. Accompanying the 75 excellent full-color plates of works by the 24 artists exhibited in the show is a humorous but poignant essay by artist and writer Harland Miller reflecting on the idea of collecting from childhood, how obsessive it is, and what a collection is to a collector and to those who see a collection. But it is the interview between Hirst and Hans Ulrich Obrist that gives a direct insight into the motivation and reason behind the murderme collection, and how it relates to Hirst the artist and Hirst the curator. Completed over three months during the summer of 2006, this interview discusses everything from his most famous works, his drawings, influences, practice and attitude towards art, to new projects such as Toddington Manor and the Newport Street Gallery. In many respects 'In the darkest hour there may be light' is perhaps the most comprehensive and intriguing project Hirst has done yet: "Collecting is the way the world works, as a human being. As you go through life, you just collect ... I always think collections are like a map of a man's life."

Damien Hirst & Margaret Mellis: Half Dead FlowersDamien Hirst & Margaret Mellis: Half Dead Flowers

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Edited by Jason Beard. Text by Damien Hirst.

This book highlights the connection between Damien Hirst (born 1965) and the British modernist artist Margaret Mellis (1914–2009), who became a close friend and mentor to the YBA protagonist during the development of his early career. In the 1980s Hirst made regular visits to Mellis' home and studio in Southwold, on the North Sea coast of England, where he spent much time studying her beautiful drawings of "half-dead flowers" on envelopes and driftwood assemblages fashioned from her beachcombing forays. In 2001 Hirst expressed the view that she had been unjustly neglected and deserved to be "up there—large on the map with her contemporaries"; their works were first exhibited side by side at the Tate in 2008. Alongside reproductions of assemblages and drawings by Mellis and Hirst, this volume includes a reproduction of a letter written to Hirst by Mellis from c. 1987, and an essay on Mellis by Hirst.

Damien Hirst: The Complete Psalm PaintingsDamien Hirst: The Complete Psalm Paintings

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Edited by Damien Hirst, Jason Beard. Text by Michael Bracewell, Amie Corry.

This beautifully illustrated book constitutes a comprehensive survey of Damien Hirst's Psalm paintings. The 150 works in the series are made up of iridescent butterfly wings and paint on canvas, which combine to form kaleidoscopic patterns reminiscent of Gothic stained glass windows. Dating from 2008, the paintings address some of Hirst's most enduring and important themes: beauty, art, belief, life and death. Each of the fully illustrated paintings is accompanied by the Old Testament prayer from which its title is derived, the text rendered on images of individually selected marble samples. Also included is a complete list of works, and essays by art writers Michael Bracewell and Amie Corry. In his essay, Bracewell writes: "The Psalm paintings can't help but bring together, in literal form, such fundamental concepts as beauty, and power over death through prayer and belief, while simultaneously seeming to propose solely their own—albeit spectacular—abstraction. As they take their place within the greater canon of Hirst's art, these paintings extend his fascination with natural history and the potentially synonymous relationships between life, death, art and 'beauty,' and the language of Christian faith and religion." The Complete Psalm Paintings is an exquisite companion to one of Hirst's most beautiful series.Damien Hirst was born in Bristol in 1965. He first came to public attention in 1988 when he conceived and curated Freeze, an exhibition of his own work and that of his contemporaries staged in an abandoned London warehouse. Since then Hirst has become widely recognized as one of the most influential artists of his generation. Alongside over 80 solo exhibitions, he has worked on numerous curatorial projects. In 2008, Hirst took the unprecedented step of bypassing gallery involvement by selling 244 new works at a Sotheby's, London auction. He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995 and received a major solo retrospective at Tate Modern, London. He lives in Devon, England.

Breakfast at The Wolseley gave Damien and I the perfect opportunity to discuss the business of the day, remembers Frank Dunphy, Damien Hirst's business manager, "the bow-tied super-ego to Mr. Hirst's id," as The Wall Street Journal has described him. "Always on time, Damien would first hold out his hand for a pen or pencil and would then begin sketching on the back of his placemat."

Portraits of Frankis published to coincide with Dunphy's retirement after almost 15 years with the artist. Seen here for the first time, Hirst's portraits were sketched during the pair's regular breakfast meetings at the famous Wolseley restaurant in London between 2004 and 2010. They provide a touching illustration of Frank and Damien's collaborative relationship as it unfolded over the course of some of the most extraordinary years of the artist's career.

Damien Hirst: RelicsDamien Hirst: Relics

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Interviews by Elena Guena.

Relics constitutes the new and largestever retrospective of Damien Hirst's work, including both iconic, and previously unseen artworks, spanning 27 years of the artistscareer. If you own one book on the work of this artist, this is the latest and most comprehensive. For the first time Hirst's two diamond skulls, "For the Love of God" (2007) and "For Heaven's Sake" (2008), are pictured together. Explaining, "art's about life and it can't really be about anything else … there isn't anything else," Hirst's work investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, anddissects the tensions and uncertainties at the heart of human experience.

Damien Hirst: The Complete Visual Candy PaintingsDamien Hirst: The Complete Visual Candy Paintings

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Text by Mario Codognato. Conversation between Mario Codognato, Hans Ulrich Obrist.

The Visual Candy paintings were made between 1992 and 1994.The works showcase the ways in which Damien Hirst used the signifier of candy during the early 1990's, exploring questions of pure aesthetics. Hirst says they were created as a direct riposte to an art critic who had dismissed Hirst's Spot Paintings as "just visual candy.' Addressing the viewer on a deliberately emotionaland instinctive level, these works, abetted by their exuberant titles, among them Some Fun (1993) and Dippy Dappy Dabby (1993), set out to question the implication that aesthetically pleasing art is inherently insignificant. While ostensibly abstract, the paintings in fact depict medicinal pills, and can be seen as a stylised depiction of the psychological effects of happy, mood-enhancing drugs. Hirst once described how, "in every painting there is a subliminal sense of unease… the colours project so much joy it's hard to feel it, but it's there. The horror underlying everything," In this context, the Visual Candy paintings, despite their surface optimism, posses a disquieting undercurrent of tension and darkness - born from an awareness of the inevitable low that follows any high. Hirst once said that "art is about life - there isn't anything else.'

Damien Hirst: The Complete Spot Paintings, 1986–2011Damien Hirst: The Complete Spot Paintings, 1986–2011

Published by Other Criteria Books.

The first and most significant documentation of Damien Hirst's iconographic spot paintings documented in this comprehensive publication spanning the years 1986-2011. Every spot painting Hirst has produced is included in this substantial publication with over 99% of them illustrated. The Complete Spot Paintings includes essays by Museum of Modern Art curator Ann Tempkin, cultural critic Michael Bracewell and art historian Robert Pincus-Witten as well as a conversation between Damien Hirst, Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari. Hirst has said, "I started them as an endless series like a sculptural idea of a painter (myself). A scientific approach to painting in a similar way to the drug companies scientific approach to life. Art doesn't purport to have all the answers; drug companies do. Hence the individual titles themselves: Acetaldehyde (1991), Albumin Human Glycated (1992), Androstanolone (1993), Arabinitol (1994), etc. . . .In the spot paintings the grid-like structure creates the beginningof the system. On each painting no two colours are the same. This ends the system; it's a simple system. No matter how I feel as an artist or painter, the paintings end up looking happy. I can still make all the emotional decisions about colour that I need to as an artist, but in the end they are lost. The end of painting. And I'm still painting; am I a painter? Or a sculptor who paints? Or justan artist? I don't know. It's not important. But it is very important that there is an endless series or enough to imply an endless series. In January 2012 the Gagosian Gallery hosted 'The Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011,' which saw an extensive selection of Hirst's Spot Paintings shown in all 11 locations of the Gagosian Gallery including New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athens, Geneva and Hong Kong. The same year Tate Modern, London exhibited the most comprehensive survey of Hirst's work to be held in the UK to date. In 2013 the artist held his largest retrospective so far in Doha, Qatar, curated by Francesco Bonami. Hirst lives and works in London, Gloucestershire and Devon.

Damien Hirst: Freedom Not GeniusDamien Hirst: Freedom Not Genius

Works from Damien Hirst's Murderme Collection

Published by Other Criteria Books.

Hirst began his collection in the late 1980s by exchanging his own works with those of his contemporaries and artist friends. It has grown to include works by many international artists of earlier generations: not only postwar masters like Bacon and Giacometti, but also pivotal figures in the history of twentieth-century art, such as Richard Hamilton, Mario Merz, Bruce Nauman, Richard Prince and Kurt Schwitters. Two themes recur frequently in this selection--memento mori and the animal kingdom--and together they are capable of communicating the spirit of the entire collection, combining masterpieces of contemporary art with fascinating specimens from the natural world. An independent curator, author and art advisor, Geuna has contributed a perceptive essay on the scope and nature of this collection as well as a penetrating interview with Damien Hirst. Another essay by Mario Codognato (writer, and curator at Blain|Southern) explores Hirst's dual role as artist/collector, and analyses his considerable influence, both on his contemporaries and on younger artists whose work is still developing. Accompanying stunning colour plates of all the works in the exhibition, there are also brief biographies of the artists involved.

Damien Hirst: Two Weeks One SummerDamien Hirst: Two Weeks One Summer

Published by Other Criteria Books.

This publication accompanies the Damien Hirst 'Two Weeks One Summer' exhibition at White Cube Gallery, May 2012. Painting has always been an important part of Hirst's oeuvre, but unlike the spot paintings and photorealist series which were made using a collaborative studio process, this body of work is altogether more personal: painted from life, by Hirst in his Devon studio. The paintings, often intimate in size, could be seen as traditional still lifes, depicting an array of carefully arranged elements, both natural and inanimate, sometimes memento mori, alongside objects and formal devices that have made their appearance in Hirst's sculptures and installations before. Exquisitely coloured birds on display stands or in simple glass boxes, butterflies, fruit and cherry blossom at the peak of its beauty, intimate the pure joy of spring's transition into summer but also the temporal significance of this natural phenomenon.Next to these bucolic objects, more sinister symbols take their place: oversized scissors, a shark's gaping jawbone, bell jars and even several lonely single or conjoined foetuses floating in jars, elements that are displaced from the laboratory table rather than the domestic one. Some objects are painted with clarity and impasto; others appear hazy and faint, as if they are somehow more insubstantial, part of a sudden apparition or dream-like vision.

Damien Hirst: Entomology Cabinets and Entomology PaintingsDamien Hirst: Entomology Cabinets and Entomology Paintings

Published by Other Criteria Books.

Published on the occasion of Damien Hirst's exhibition at White Cube in Hong Kong in the spring of 2013. Among many new works illustrated in the publication are pieces from some of Hirst's latest series: the Entomology paintings and the Blade paintings. Hirst began work on the Entomology paintings in 2009. Each piece is made by placing hundreds of varieties of insect and beetle species into household gloss paint, in intricate geometric patterns. The series is reminiscent of Hirst's iconic series of butterfly wing Kaleidoscope pieces, dating from 2001, which were originally inspired by Victorian tea trays. As with the butterfly--one of Hirst's most enduring "universal triggers"--the insects' appeal derives largely from the appearance of life they retain in death. However, whilst the iridescent beauty of the wings in the Kaleidoscope series evoke stained glass windows, and are often assigned spiritual titles, the Entomology paintings are named after phases and characters in Dante Alighieri's tortuous vision of the afterlife, The Divine Comedy. The works also allude to Hirst's longterm interest in the nineteenth-century fascination with natural history and the irony involved in having to kill something in order to look at it. The Blade paintings are amongst the newest series of works in Hirst's practice. Thousands of variously shaped scalpel blades are positioned on a canvas in spectacular, mandala-like patterns. In some of the works, intermittent areas of coloured gloss paint have been layered in between the blades. The Blade paintings reference two of Hirst's seminal earlier series. While their geometric patterns recall the earlier series of butterfly Kaleidoscope paintings, in their use of surgical instruments, Hirst also returns to one of his most recognisable themes: medicine, and its inevitable futility in the face of our mortality. The surgical materials, first used by Hirst in his early 90s instrument cabinets, are described by the artist as "phenomenal objects because they have to have this confidence and this belief. They are the best quality. They are brilliantly designed, for all the right reasons." With the Blade paintings, the instruments eventual inability to arrest decay is highlighted by their relegation to decorative status.

Damien Hirst: Forgotten PromisesDamien Hirst: Forgotten Promises

Published by Other Criteria Books.
Text by Francesco Bonami. Interviews by Karen Smith.

With full-color plates of paintings and sculptures, this title was produced for the inaugural exhibition at Gagosian Gallery, Hong Kong, Damien Hirst: Forgotten Promises. It includes "For Heaven's Sake" (2008), a life-size human baby skull cast in platinum and covered in 8,128 pink and white diamonds, as well as beautiful diamond cabinets in gold and silver. A group of paintings from 2008 to 2009, including "Age of Magnificence" and "Fading Magnificence," show real butterflies entombed in layers of shiny metallic paint. The new Love Paintings are painted in oil with painstaking attention to realistic detail. "Why else would you do it, when you could just get a photograph that looks identical?" Hirst has said. "But it's not the same thing, is it? A photograph is from a moment, a split second. Painting is about stopping to look at the world, considering it, and giving it more and more importance."

Damien Hirst: The SoulsDamien Hirst: The Souls

Published by Other Criteria Books.

In total 'The Souls' is made up of 4 butterflies, in 80 different colourways, each one in an edition of 15. Vibrant with hue, the finished effect of each image is that of a resonant tension between the stillness of death and the trembling, iridescent life that the individual butterflies convey. 'The Souls' is therefore quintessentially Hirstian, combining the impact of visual spectacle with a powerfully eloquent confluence of medium and visual language. Each butterfly is depicted here and 4 foil block inserts depict the actual foiling used in the prints that the images represent.

Damien Hirst: Requiem IIDamien Hirst: Requiem II

Published by Other Criteria Books.

Requiem II details all the previously unseen skull paintings from the Requiem exhibition at the Pinchuk Art Center, Kiev, Ukraine, in April 2009. Featuring over 40 works painted between 2006 and 2008, Hirst uses paint to convey the darker, philosophical attributes of death. Emerging from the midnight darkness, his Requiem skull paintings speak of a remembrance of corporeality and the transportation from body into soul. Using the skull as representative of this transition, Hirst appeals to our universal nature, his art merging sublime romanticism with life's cold scientific reality: together we drive towards death.

Damien Hirst: Theories, Models, Methods, Approaches, Assumptions, Results and FindingsDamien Hirst: Theories, Models, Methods, Approaches, Assumptions, Results and Findings

Published by Other Criteria Books.

Theories, Models, Methods, Approaches, Assumptions, Results and Findings was published to coincide with the exhibition of the same title at Gagosian Gallery, New York. All works contained in the exhibition are illustrated and accompanied by excerpts from the Journal of Clinical Forensic Medicine, a text by novelist Gordon Burn, and an essay by Dr George Poste, Chairman of the US Department of Defense Science Board on Bioterrorism. The book references the academic scientific research publications that have inspired Hirst's work since the beginning of his artistic endeavours, placing the sculptures and paintings into what feels like a natural home. The diagram on the cover shows the changes and processes affecting the body after death, and illustrated essay titles include 'The epidemiology of violence' and 'Observations on fatal injuries to the brain stem and/or upper cervical spinal cord'. These essays, and many more with their accompanying diagrams, tables and pie-charts, bring order and reason to unacceptably difficult events like much of Hirst's work.

Published to accompany Damien Hirst's 2007 exhibition at White Cube in London, Beyond Belief shows new work by Hirst including major formaldehyde pieces, to the more recent "fact paintings" and the now legendary diamond skull "For the Love of God," emphasising that Hirst is quite possibly the most outstanding international contemporary artist: "This is the real beginning of the 21st century, just as the 20th began with the Demoiselles d'Avignon. I don't care about the so-called meaning, this thing is about victory over death. This is an image so tremendously powerful that it will change art." Beyond Belief includes over 70 exquisite full colour plates and an essay by novelist and writer Will Self that discusses hallmark works such as "A Thousand Years" (1990), and Hirst's practice and ascendance to international fame through the late 1990s. Accompanying Self 's insightful and engaging text is an in-depth interview between Hirst and Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director of London's Serpentine Gallery, and also an essay by art historian andcurator Rudi Fuchs that considers and explores the significance of 'For the Love of God' in relation to Hirst's oeuvre: "After all, Damien Hirst's art is concerned with love and fear, with death, malady, physical decay, medical practice and pharmaceutical illusion ... The inevitable proximity of death is the most real thing in human life. Fear of death is a more powerful emotion than love or lust. To some extent fear of death keeps us alive."

Damien Hirst: Corpus, Drawings 1981–2006Damien Hirst: Corpus, Drawings 1981–2006

Published by Other Criteria Books.

This comprehensive monograph was produced to accompany the drawings retrospective Damien Hirst: Corpus: Drawings 1981-2006, held at Gagosian Gallery, New York in 2006. It features more than 200 drawings that offer a historical insight into rarely seen aspects of the artist's work and process. Included are early drawings from Hirst's student days; pencil sketches for seminal sculptures such as "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living," "A Thousand Years," "'The Acquired Inability to Escape," "Away from the Flock" and "The Hat Makes the Man"; preparatory diagrams for early spot paintings and medicine cabinets; a large-scale series of 14 drawings for The Stations of the Cross (2004); and proposals for unrealised and future projects. Accompanying the drawings is a conversation between the artist and political philosopher John Gray (author of Straw Dogs, False Dawn and Al Qaeda and What It Means to Be Modern), and an essay by British historian Simon Baker.

Damien Hirst: New ReligionDamien Hirst: New Religion

Published by Other Criteria Books.

Published in 2006 following Damien Hirst's first major print exhibition at the Paul Stolper Gallery in London in 2005, New Religion explores Hirst's central themes: ''I was thinking that there are four important things in life: religion, love, art and science... Of them all, science seems to be the right one now. Like religion, it provides the glimmer of hope that maybe it will be all right in the end.'' With full-color reproductions of this entire series of Hirst silkscreen prints produced for the New Religion exhibition, such as "The Apostles," "The Wound of Christ," "The Last Supper" and "The Stations of the Cross," as well as editioned sculptures and multiples such as "The Fate of Man" and the 'box/cabinet' called "New Religion," this hardback publication is a modern day biblical picture-book exploring combinations between science and religion. And the ideas about Hirst's science/religion dichotomy are further explored through an intriguing interview with Sean O'Hagan that moves effortlessly from the macro to the micro, and back again, ''I just can't help thinking that science is the new religion for many people. It's as simple and as complicated as that really.''

Damien Hirst: Romance in the Age of UncertaintyDamien Hirst: Romance in the Age of Uncertainty

Published by Other Criteria Books.

This catalogue was produced to accompany Damien Hirst's 2003 exhibition at White Cube gallery, London. The show dissected and recast the story of Jesus and his disciples through paintings and sculptural work while revealing the uncertainty at the heart of human experience. The exhibited works included The Apostles,a series of 13 clinical steel and glass cabinets filled with medical instruments, weapons, ornaments, blood, and life's detrius: a dozen canvases encrusted with flies suspended in resin, each given a fatal disease for a title: skinned cows'/bulls' heads in individual tanks punctured/lacerated/stabbed with knives and glass fragments; and huge canvases embedded with butterfly wings arranged in extraordinary grid systems. This book contains 46 colour illustrations, including many details of the exhibited works and four gatefolds. An introductory essay by Annushka Shani examines each work more closely, drawing out the themes of love, life and death explored by Hirst through this exhibition.

Damien Hirst: The Cancer ChroniclesDamien Hirst: The Cancer Chronicles

Published by Other Criteria Books.

Not so much poems, more titles gone mad. The Cancer Chronicles is a collection of thirteen poems by the artist Damien Hirst. Hirst wrote the book to accompany his work Romance in the Age of Uncertainty - Jesus & His Disciples (Death, Martyrdom, Suicide & Ascension), (not illustrated). Each poem shares a title with the installed elements of the piece, which include thirteen steel and glass cabinets each alluding to the life and death of the Apostles. In his first published book of writing Hirst explores in written form some of the motifs that have endured in his work: death, decay, disease and belief. The poems provide further insight into Hirst's sculptural works, but please do not read this publication whilst listening to the music.

This book is a creative guide to the making of arguably the most extraordinary art object to be made in the 21st century. Published to accompany the 2007 exhibition Damien Hirst: Beyond Belief at White Cube, London, it gives a fascinating pictorial insight into how Hirst's diamond skull piece "For the Love of God" was conceived and produced. Illustrated with candid behind-the-scenes photographs by Johnnie Shand Kydd, the book includes a number of preparatory drawings by Damien Hirst and a fold out image of the diamond skull. Accompanying this is an essay by the art historian Rudi Fuchs, who writes: "The skull is out of this world, celestial almost. I tend to see it as a glorious intense victory over death." A number of leading experts in the fields of archaeology and dentistry have also contributed detailed studies on the diamond skull, including analyses of its age and ancestry.

Damien Hirst: From the Cradle to the Grave, Selected DrawingsDamien Hirst: From the Cradle to the Grave, Selected Drawings

Published by Other Criteria Books.

Following Damien Hirst's Biennale Grand Prize, which he was awarded in 2001 for The Last Supper prints, Ljubljana International Biennale of Graphic Arts invited the artist to produce an entirely new show for their 25th Biennale in 2003. In response, Hirst exhibited his first ever exhibition of drawings which, spanning his career, consisted of approximately 100 pieces. Many were sourced from private and public collections and displayed the studious, preliminary and imaginative workings of the artist. A number of drawings dated form his early teenagehood, others were lent by close friends, who had been given personal drawings by the artist. Included in the exhibition were a number of preparatory sketches for later and larger works including paintings and sculptures. This publication reproduces over 300 drawings and is a fascinating and diverse insight into the artist's working mind and methods, it manages to convey his humour and integrity in the making process. In the words of Hugh Allan, "these drawings should be seen as the spirits or shadows of more robust 'living' things … Urgent to render and explanation, Hirst has the energy of a dying man desperate to tell us a truth; as the title of the show suggests, cradle and grave bracket what lies between."
