The World of Tim Burton

"Growing up in Burbank, California, there was not much of a museum culture. Except for the Hollywood Wax Museum, I never visited one until I was a teenager: Instead, I occupied my time watching monster movies and television, drawing whatever came into my head, or playing in the local cemetery," filmmaker Tim Burton writes in Hatje Cantz's new overview of his visual artwork. "Later, when I did start frequenting museums, I was struck by how similar the vibe was to the cemetery. Both have a quiet, introspective, yet electrifying atmosphere: excitement, mystery, discovery, life and death—all in one place." Featured image is Untitled (Trick or Treat). (1980)
