FROM THE BOOK
"...This is not the first time that designers have been asked to explore the consequences of a multiethnic society. Twenty-five years ago, Alvaro Siza designed homes with floor plans that accommodated the lifestyles of 'guestworker families' – as they were called then – in The Hague.
The brief for the Prix de Rome addresses multiethnic society in a broader light. It encourages the participants to explore questions that may be obvious but therefore no less difficult to answer. What kinds of interventions could inspire people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds to enter the public space with confidence and self-respect? And what can designers do to help create an open society in which different sections of the population no longer turn their backs on one another?"
