Giovanni Iudice
Text by Francesco Gallo, Elena Pontiggia.
Giovanni Iudice's paintings and drawings of physicality—of crowds of migrants, crowds dispersed across beaches, of individual nudes and lovers—are full of air and light, immediate and yet fondly remote. Using photography as a starting point, he transforms fleeting moments into classic depictions of the present.
FROM THE BOOK
"Landscapes, interiors, and portraits are the figurative elements through which Giovanni Iudice's artistic personality expresses itself. Iudice is an artist who perfectly follows the tradition of Italian realism. The protagonists of his works seem to be literally 'photographed,' as if they were tied up in space: 'perceptions of hidden truth.' Iudice's realism is the result of a meticulous and attentive observation of reality, of a rigid pursuit of style, and of the need to represent what in our view is--as it is--a more careful attempt to highlight life conditions through the richness of details. Loneliness and pain, but also and above all daily life, which is always calm and silent. In fact, the subjects of his paintings show a reality that hides pain and even a sense of suspension. "The cycle of works exhibited in Palermo--besides confirming Iudice's expertise and maturity--gives us a merciless image of the world in front of us, the world we live in, and which the artist shows us in its crudeness. It is the world of immigrants to be told: a journey, exhausted bodies, and the hope of a better life."
