"The early signs of the Indonesian contemporary art already made their appearance in the beginning of the seventies, when the contemporary art (in its current sense) was still taking shape, even in Europe and United States. We could clearly see these signs in an exhibition held by the Indonesian New Art Movement at the Jakarta Arts Center in 1975. The exhibitions held by this movement (1975-1979) drew harsh criticism and gave rise to controversies for many subsequent years. This movement, initiated by young artists from Indonesian art faculties, was mainly academic in nature. Therefore, the people, and even the Indonesian art world at the time, did not quite understand its ideas."
