Edited by José Francisco Yvars. Text by Pierre Daix, Alain Mousseigne, Álvaro Martínez Novillo, Albert Mercadé, Josep Casamartine.
The work of painter, printmaker, sculptor and stage designer Antoni Clavé (1913-2005) evolved from an intimiste style influenced by Bonnard and Vuillard to a pure, minimal look, in later years becoming entirely abstract. This monograph is the first complete survey since his death.
AM: "You always talk about your work with such a great modesty and you often say that you don’t like using terms like 'artist ', ' work ', ' creation ' …Would you accept the word ' craftsman ' being used for you, as it seems appropriate to describe the way in which you work?" AC: "Yes it’s a wonderful world… craftsman, that’s magnificent, very noble. Artist…it’s overworked these days. When you think that show business stars like X or Y are artists, yes I obviously prefer beings a craftsman, and even a craftsman’s assistant…There is so much confusion over the term ' artist ' that it bothers me. I rarely say that I am an artist who paints, but simply say I am a painter."
