|   |   | Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design1924–TodayEdited by Mateo Kries, Tanja Cunz. Text by Alex Coles, Tanja Cunz, Krzysztof Fijalkowski, Mateo Kries, Claudia Mareis, Vera Sacchetti.
Surrealism's enduring impact on furniture design, fashion, advertising and beyondOne of the most influential art movements of the 20th century, surrealism expanded our artistic and quotidian reality by drawing upon myths, dreams and the subconscious as sources of artistic inspiration. The movement began in literature and art, but by the 1930s it was beginning to have an impact on design—an influence that continues to this day. The fascination was often mutual: surrealism opened design up to the realm of dreams, and design could introduce surrealism to the wider world. “I try to create fantastic things, magical things, things like in a dream,” Salvador Dalí said of his work. “The world needs more fantasy.” Designers in fashion, furniture design, advertising, theater, film and architecture took up the call.
Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design is the first book to document this fascinating conversation. The publication includes numerous essays and a comprehensive selection of images which trace the reciprocal exchanges between surrealism and design by juxtaposing exemplary artworks and design objects.
Among the artists and designers featured in this volume are Gae Aulenti, Louise Bourgeois, Umberto and Fernando Campana, Achille Castiglioni, Giorgio de Chirico, Le Corbusier, Salvador Dalí, Marcel Duchamp, Frederick Kiesler, René Magritte, Carlo Mollino, Meret Oppenheim, Jerszy Seymour, and many others. Historical texts and short commentaries by contemporary designers round out the publication, putting the extravagant objects in context. In-depth yet appropriately fantastical, Objects of Desire makes one thing abundantly clear: form does not always follow function in design—it can also follow our obsessions, fantasies and hidden desires.

| | FROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 1/2/2020As the sole distributor of more than 1,200 new books per year, published by dozens of superb, often groundbreaking and highly design-conscious publishers, it would be hard to pick "the best" of 2019. But when it comes to highlighting the most unexpectedly, understatedly gorgeous, one book does come to mind. Perfectly printed on deluxe, creamy matte paper and filled with scholarly essays alongside 500 color reproductions of Surrealist art and design objects in dialogue, Objects of Desire: Surrealism and Design, 1924–Today from world-renowned Vitra Design Museum is fascinating and enlightening in and of itself. But it's the understated yet absolutely unique exterior that brings this book to the next level. It's a sort of miracle of book design, wherein the gold-stamped, bright red, linenbound cover blends seamlessly with its monochromatic red page edges while an undulating, sculptural, beveled ridge on the front cover effortlessly references Salvador Dali's iconic 1938 "Mae West Lips Sofa" (not to mention Studio65's 1970 takeoff, the "Bocca" sofa, pictured opposite a Dali work on paper on the spread above.) If you're a book nerd, this one's truly sexy. continue to blog | FORTHCOMING AND NEW: DESIGN AND DECORATIVE ARTS | | SteidlISBN: 9783969993743 USD $30.00 | CAD $44Pub Date: 2/11/2025 Forthcoming
