Dorothee & Konrad Fischer, Archives of an Attitude
Text by Thomas Kellein, Friedrich Meschede, Guido de Werd.
In 1967, Konrad Fischer (1939-1996) opened his eponymous gallery in Düsseldorf, changing the course of art history with his tireless promotion of Minimalist and Conceptual art. This publication provides the first comprehensive view of the extraordinary collection he built with his wife Dorothee.
"Ever since the gallery's opening in October 1967, the 'Exhibitions at Konrad Fischer's' were to set the standards in Europe for the perception and appreciation of Conceptual art--on three counts: firstly, by reason of the artists whom Konrad Fischer invited to exhibit at his gallery; secondly, by reason of the site-specific works created specially for the gallery's exhibition room at 12 Neubruckstrasse, Dusseldorf; and, thirdly, by reason of the gallery's influence over the public and private collections into which the works exhibited at the gallery then found their way….Hardly anywhere else can one find examples of such intensity of innovation in the art of those years. It was from the close collaboration with the artists that evolved those relations of friendship and trust that in turn nourished the continuous growth in the number of collectors who purchased their works 'at Konrad Fischer's.' Conversely, it could also be said this friendship and trust enabled the development of exhibitions that were really out of the ordinary, for it was at Konrad Fischer's that one could meet with an understanding and appreciative eye for whatever was new, challenging and different. Indeed, one was among the like-minded."
