This monograph is the definitive guide to the career of one of the most prodigious fashion photographers of our time. From his earliest work at Harper's Bazaar to his now mythic collaboration with Vogue, Patrick Demarchelier has single-handedly redefined the fashion photograph and the fashion industry along with it. His celebrity portraits have shaped the public personas of figures ranging from Princess Diana to Madonna. Demarchelier is everywhere at once, with a photographic sensibility that is as iconic, incisive and as varied as his subject matter. Featuring more than 400 of Demarchelier's most telling photographs, this volume provides an invaluable fashion reference point, all the while charting the course of our own cultural obsession with celebrity and beauty. Born outside Paris in 1943, Patrick Demarchelier relocated to New York in 1975, where he began his editorial career with Harper's Bazaar and Hearst Publications. His photographs appear regularly on the covers and in the pages of publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, among many others. He was the 2007 recipient of the Eleanor Lambert Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He continues to live and work in New York.

Patrick Demarchelier is a prolific, award-winning modern photographer who since the mid-1970s has worked for almost every major fashion publication, including Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s BAZAAR, Allure and Glamour. This new monograph collects over 400 of his most referential images from that period of time. Originally published to be available for his exhibition at the Petit Palais in Paris, entitled “Patrick Demarchelier: Images et Mode à Paris,” this book is thick with both imagery as well as artistic inspiration. The works range from commercial print editorial to private portraits, and although extremely proficient in the use of color, Demarchelier truly excels in the arena of black-and-white monochromatic photographs.

Patrick Demarchelier is an epic volume, in size and content, which serves as a catalog, a visual diary, a chronicle, and treasury of some of the most identifiable images from the 20th and 21st centuries taken by Demarchelier. Not only is the book filled with superb and memorable images, but there is also practically no text to encounter while viewing this mini museum disguised as a book. There are few who can compare their body of work to this artist.
"Puffy, East Hampton" (1999) is reproduced from Patrick Demarchelier, first published by STEIDL in 2009 and still one of the most beautiful fashion monographs ever printed. In her introduction Anna Wintour writes, "Patrick was one of the very first photographers to make the connection between fashion and lifestyle; his pictures convey how a woman interacts with style and the stylish world around her. The rest of the industry has been catching up with his vision—the ease, the charm, the naturalism, and the endless sunny optimism… His vision flows from his eye to the finished print without so much as a hint of drama, or tension, or conflict. And if Patrick is able to convey the good live in is pictures, it's because he lies that way himself. He has found an equilibrium that's pretty unusual in this industry. He has his wife Mia, and his three sons, and his dachshund Puffy whom he dotes on. He works, he windsurfs, he works, he sails, he works, he travels—and he tackles all of it with that easy-going, unflappable nature of his. He doesn't concern himself with neurotically worrying about whether a shoot will work or not. He told me once that, 'Everyone has one good picture in them.' And as this monograph attests, Patrick is blessed with an inexhaustible supply of them." continue to blog
