|   |   | Arthur Elgort: The Big PictureForeword by Grace Coddington. Text by Martin Harrison.
"A delightful mix of personal photographs and professional work, punctuated with notes from the ever-candid and self-effacing Elgort.” –Tessa Maffucci, Architectural DigestThis is Arthur Elgort's (born 1940) first comprehensive book, showing his world-renowned fashion imagery alongside his personal work. The Big Picture spans Elgort's five-decade career and illustrates his longevity as an emulated fashion photographer. His lively and casual shooting style is significantly influenced by his lifelong love of music and dance, particularly jazz and ballet. Elgort's 1971 debut in British Vogue created a sensation in the fashion world where his soon-to-be iconic snapshot style and emphasis on movement and natural light transgressed norms of fashion photography. Elgort subsequently rose to fame working for such distinguished magazines as American, French and Italian Vogue, Interview, GQ, Life and Rolling Stone and shooting advertising campaigns for fashion labels including Chanel, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent.

This fall, an exhibit of the same debuted at Yorkville’s Izzy Gallery, where sprightly images of Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Gia Carangi livened up the walls with their mid-nineties beauty. New York Magazine, The Cut Erica Schwiegershausen The retrospective tome — the most comprehensive collection of Elgort’s work to date — includes his most iconic fashion photography from the past five decades alongside photographs of dancers, musicians, and his children: Sophie, Warren, and Ansel. i-D Francesca Dunn Having received the CFDA Board of Directors' Special Tribute Award for his indelible contribution to fashion, Arthur is compiling his iconic work and personal images to form The Big Picture, a book of beautiful highlights from a portfolio spanning almost 50 years. Architectural Digest Tessa Maffucci The book is a delightful mix of personal photographs and professional work, punctuated with notes from the ever-candid and self-effacing Elgort. Bal Harbour Magazine Jessica Michault Arthur Elgort is a man who loves the unexpected. Over the past five decades, his photographic work has been characterized by its ability to convey the feeling that his subjects have been caught unaware, as if they are just going about their business in a nonchalant way, and yet still maintain a sense of glamour–a snapshot, if you will, into the lives of supermodels, celebrities and even Elgort's own family. A lifelong proponent of shooting with natural light and giving a sense of movement to his shots, Elgort was the first photographer to take models out of the studio and onto the streets, arguably making him the grandfather of the current street-style and concrete catwalk approach to photography. He is even credited with creating the now-famous "Vogue Jump" shot, a self-explanatory style of image known to any fashionista worth her salt. To celebrate his monumental photographic achievements, Steidl is publishing an impressive coffee-table book, "Arthur Elgort: The Big Picture." Inside, 280 Elgort images, both iconic and personal, come together to highlight the artist's unique and engaging point of view. |

| | FROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 9/9/2016"Kate knew what to do to give me a good picture. At Café Lipp the waiters were having their dinner and she climbed up on the table. We thought they'd be mad but they loved it. I only worked with her a handful of times but it seems like more because of how much I got from her. When I first saw Kate I thought, 'She's not very tall and doesn't seem that special.' But it didn't matter. She is incredibly photogenic. Every picture was perfect—she just did it all so naturally." This 1993 photograph of Moss is reproduced from Steidl's superb retrospective monograph, Arthur Elgort: The Big Picture, a classic staff pick for New York Fashion Week. continue to blogFROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 9/15/2015"I've always liked the immediacy of photography. Either you get the shot or you don't. What most people don't know is that I was a painter before I became a photographer. But for me painting was a lonely art, there was no one for me to talk to, my fingernails were always dirty, and it took far too long to get a finished product. With photography I could take some pictures, have some fun, and move on to the next subject with no fuss. It was all much more my style."
