101 Danish Design Icons

Edited by Lars Dybdahl.

101 Danish Design Icons

A definitive history of 20th-century Danish design through 101 classic objects

Denmark has long loomed large in international design history. Today, Danish furniture, textiles, home appliances and utensils from the 1960s and ‘70s are more popular than ever, for sale at design galleries and a rarity at flea markets. This publication provides an extensive overview of those everyday objects that have to this day written design history both in Denmark and worldwide. Along with 32 leading scholars and journalists, the Head of the Library and Research at the Designmuseum Danmark in Copenhagen, Lars Dybdahl, explores the fascinating history of the individual objects. Playfully presented and situated in their historical context, the catalog sheds new light on this unique world of objects. Among the design classics included are the Carlsberg lager label, the Dursley-Pedersen bicycle, the PH lamp, Dansk Standard cutlery, the Beolit 39 radio, the Spoke-Back Sofa, the Flag Halyard Chair, Kobenstyle kitchenware, the Nilfisk vacuum cleaner, LEGO, the Trinidad stacking chair and ECCO shoes.Designers include Arne Jacobson, Georg Jensen, Finn Juhl, Borge Mogensen, Verner Panton and Hans J. Wegner.

FROM THE BOOK
A national identity?
Ten Key Themes in Danish Design

If credible concepts can be posited to describe something specifically Danish in the cultivation of products, they will be of a distinctly historical processual nature. In an understanding that both captures the retrospective view and points to qualities of value to a contemporary and future design practice in Denmark, at least ten key themes can be identified that will be relevant to any discussion of identities in Danish design and which are all at play in the iconic objects and their generation of meaning. Naturally, they are also related to Danish craft-based and industrial production conditions and have influenced consumption patterns and taste preferences.

  • Moderation in the dialogue with other countries
  • Building bridges – ‘preserving the continuity of development’
  • Liveability – creating a (Nordic) atmosphere
  • Tool aesthetics, simplicity and the detail
  • Crafts as a source of innovation for industrial design
  • The value of symbolism and associations
  • The social and empathetic profile – the user focus
  • The anti-authoritarian stance – pulling together
  • The ecological imperative – sustainability
  • The new temperament

101 Danish Design Icons

Playing with Peter Hiort's original 1992 logo for Netto, the Danish discount supermarket chain, this recent shopping bag features the brand's beloved black Scots terrier sporting an organic foods medallion around his neck rather than the usual basket in his mouth. At once emblematic and malleable, the Netto logo is one of 101 Danish Design Icons highlighted in this outstanding new book from Hatje Cantz. Featuring everything from nineteenth-century obstetric forceps to '50s LEGOs, 1930s Bakelite radios and wooden clogs from the 1970s, this playful 464-page survey is must-have for anyone interested in Scandinavian design. continue to blog
