Cultural Location and Identity in Times of Globalization
Edited by Kathleen Bühler, Ingrid Wildi Merino. Text by Bertrand Bacqué, Fernando Balcells, Justo Pastor Mellado.
Twenty years after the fall of Augusto Pinochet, Chilean artists are still confronting the legacy of his dictatorship. Dislocación supplements the Chilean perspective with that of European artists, together focusing on issues of migration, integration, unemployment and homelessness in the aftermath of global economic and political upheaval.
"Chile is a case in point. Having achieved independence rather early, this Latin American country has since gone through a process of political and economic development that is typical for many countries. Chile has also for a long time maintained an economic partnership with Switzerland. To mark the 200th anniversary of Chilean independence, Pro Helvetia together with other foundations and institutions has made possible an exemplary cultural exchange project. On the initiative of Ingrid Wildi Merino, artists from the two countries were invited to consider the migration processes in Chile triggered by political and economic change. Wildi Merino, a Chilean artist with Swiss roots, developed a concept to investigate the complex conditions of existence in Chile which had already become a laboratory for testing neoliberal economic principles some forty years ago. The exhibition Dislocación tells individual stories, visualizes the unimaginable, analyzes existential conditions, and allows conclusions to be drawn"
