|   |   | Tschabalala Self: Bodega RunIntroduction by Sasha Bonét. Text by Tschabalala Self, Naomi Fry, G'Ra Asim, Loryn Lopes, Camille Okhio, Carolyn “CC” Concepcion, Raven Rakia, Roya Marsh, Joshua Bennett, Ayanna Dozier.
Self examines the complexities of the New York City bodega through her vibrant paintings, sculptures and installations alongside newly commissioned essaysWorking across a range of mediums, including large-scale painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage and installation, Tschabalala Self’s (born 1990) exuberant and visually seductive artworks often focus on stories of urban life, the body and humanity to explore cultural attitudes toward race and gender. Taking its title from the celebrated series of installations which culminated in a 2019 exhibition at Los Angeles’ Hammer Museum, Bodega Run documents Self’s multiyear-long exploration of the bodega—corner-store fixtures of New York City neighborhoods—as both a gathering place for community and a microcosm of the shifting political and economic forces that impact the lives of city dwellers, particularly of Black and Latin descent. In vibrant paintings, sculptures and dizzying immersive installations, Self captures the densely stocked shelves, neon signs and intermingling characters of the New York City bodega. This lavishly designed monograph reproduces works and photographs from throughout the Bodega Run series, alongside significant new texts that expand on the project and Self’s practice and a sewn-in zine insert with photographs of New York bodegas. Tschabalala Self: Bodega Run is an essential look at a defining series of artworks by one of the most exciting young artists working today.

| | FROM THE ARTBOOK BLOG CORY REYNOLDS | DATE 3/15/2024“Bayo” (2017) is reproduced from hot new release Tschabalala Self: Bodega Run, edited by Sascha Bonét, designed by Pacific and published by Gregory R. Miller & Co. A remarkable publication that has been flying off shelves since the moment it arrived in our warehouses, this clothbound hardcover with zine insert features paintings, sculpture and installation works related to Self’s multiyear examination and celebration of the bodega—underrecognized “hood institution” of NYC Black and Brown communities. Self writes, “There are many inspiring and positive aspects of bodega culture, mainly the fact that these small, versatile businesses are, and always have been, owned by people of color to serve communities of color. The bodega also functions as a multicultural space within the Black diaspora, a space where individuals of African descent, from the Americas and abroad, share both social and financial interactions. … The bodega is both positive and problematic, and through this complexity its significance arises. The culture of the bodega is a reflection of so many aspects of Black and Brown city life. For this reason, the bodega is the perfect avatar by which to speak on the community at large." continue to blog | ART BOOKS & MUSEUM EXHIBITION CATALOGS: FORTHCOMING AND RECENT RELEASES | | Walker Art CenterISBN: 9781935963301 USD $50.00 | CAD $71 UK £ 45Pub Date: 11/12/2024 Active | In stock
