“My drawings and paintings are really just the photographs I would have taken if I were not obsessed with sketchbooks.” —Tommy Kane
Tommy Kane has worked as a creative director in advertising for over 30 years, during which time he has kept sketchbooks, documenting his surroundings with his humble weapon of choice—the Uni-ball Vision Fine Point—in a style he has described as a cross between Robert Crumb and James Jean with a large dose of MAD magazine thrown in.
An urban sketchbook by a virtuoso draughtsman, All My Photographs Are Made with Pens follows the international success of Kane's first book, An Excuse to Draw (2014). As the title suggests, Kane approaches scenes with a photographic eye but renders them in his trademark detailed drawing style. The subjects are wide-ranging—wildlife, models, travel and movie sets—but all vividly convey his characteristic charm and wit.
Born in Jamaica, Queens, Tommy Kane attended art school in Buffalo, before moving to New York. He has created print ads and television commercials for major corporations (among them Sony, Samsung, IBM and Barnes & Noble). Kane has also created one of the most memorable advertising campaigns of the last decade for Steve Madden (who has attributed the financial success of his company to Kane's work), and for Yellow Tail Wine (the most successful launch of a wine brand in US history).

FROM THE BOOK
Preface
Ansel Adams and I have a lot in common. Both of us are great image makers. He used a camera to record what he saw. I use a ballpoint pen. Ansel had to lug equipment wherever he went. His pack contained a large format camera, tripod, changing tents, chemicals and lots of film. Basically he was carrying 30 pounds of stuff. My knapsack is always a burden on my aching back. There are drawing books, camping stool, my glasses, paint sets, pens, colored pencils and a few cans of beer. That may not seem like much but somehow it still weighs a ton. He grew up in California and I have actually visited California many times.
The two of us are artists who search for that perfect angle to make a picture of. Adams scaling to the top of the high Sierras is no different from me getting my ass to the top of Machu Picchu to do a painting. His pictures did not just appear with the click of the shutter. They very slowly came to life in a bath of chemicals. There was a lot of dodging and burning of the negative onto the paper. Hour upon hour was spent perfecting the ultimate shot. My images slowly come to life too. I painstakingly hand draw every detail that is in a scene, sometimes taking up to 5 hours. He once photographed the Grand Tetons after a blizzard. I once drew a bag of potato chips in Korea after a night of drinking soju. The similarities are endless.
Ansel has become a world famous legend in the art world. I have gained a certain amount of fame with housewives that live in the Tri-State Area, who draw in sketchbooks. Adams and I have almost followed identical paths to stardom.
Just like the famous photographer dude, I too, wear a funny hat everywhere I go. Today I am often recognized because I am the guy sitting on a camping stool drawing with a gorgeous fedora on. If some lost hiker had stumbled upon a dapper looking man with a giant 8 by 10 camera photographing some waterfall in the middle of nowhere, he would have instantly known if was Adams. At age 17, he joined the Sierra Club, an environmental preservation organization. He remained a member for 50 years. As a young man I began drinking Sierra Nevada beer. For the past 40 years I have remained a member of that drinking club. What a coincidence.
In 1980, President Jimmy Carter awarded Ansel the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2011, Jimmy Carter and I were both staying at the Grand Hyatt in Seoul, Korea. Our paths never crossed. - Tommy Kane
“I am bombarded with photography on a daily basis,” Tommy Kane writes in his new monograph, All My Photographs Are Made with Pens. “My Facebook, Instagram and interweb are filled with people’s shots of food, pets, vacations, sunsets, and any other whim their shutter fingers deem important. All of this imagery overload has come to make me realize that my drawings and paintings are really just the photographs I would have taken if I were not obsessed with sketchbooks. Because each one takes so many hours to hand craft, they are far more compelling to look at than just plain old photos. As an artist, my time is spent searching out visuals that interest me and then capturing them. Imagine a camera that had a little man inside who was sitting at an easel. When you click the shutter, he takes four hours to paint a picture that eventually get spit out of the camera into your hands. That’s basically what I do.” continue to blog
