People arrive in the Big Apple every day, hoping to make something of themselves. How many of them succeed? And how do the people already living there, who have perhaps already failed or succeeded, feel about the city? In New York Is…, German photographer Nadine Ottawa (born 1979) and Swiss journalist Nuria Furrer (born 1982) explored these issues, approaching people on the streets of New York and asking them to complete the sentence "New York is …." This catalogue presents their answers, next to Otawa’s color portraits. Among those answers: "A pot of gold." "Madness." "Nightlife and daylife." "Full of laws." "The world’s best playground." "Paul Auster." "The best thing that ever happened to me." "Love." "A city that I would never, ever leave."
