The most recent series by New York–based painter Pat Steir (born 1940) evolved out of her seminal Waterfall paintings, created by pouring, throwing or dragging pigment across her canvases. The book offers an intimate introduction to the Kairos series and includes essays, Steir’s poems, an artist interview and illustrated chronology.

This monograph celebrates the Waterfall paintings of Pat Steir (born 1940), begun in 1989. Steir pours a mixture of pigment, oil and turpentine down a vertical canvas and waits for it to coalesce between layers, resulting in stratified compositions and overlapping color.

Published by Charta. Edited and with text by Doris von Drathen.
The painter and printmaker Pat Steir is a draftswoman of letters, signs and symbolic marks, drips and spills. Her pictorial universe has been divided by critics into many different styles, epochs and categories. In this monograph, the German art historian Doris von Drathen, currently a Professor at Cornell University, detects a consistent project throughout Steir's painting oeuvre, rich and diversified as it is: for von Drathen the paintings are linked by a persistent philosophical investigation into "what is and what you think is," relentlessly analyzing the philosophical illusion of reality and its perception.

A few years ago, The New York Times's Ken Johnson wrote of a series of Pat Steir paintings that "Beauty and Intellect join forces" in them, and that "what saves them from being just pretty pictures is the way they weave together several strands of meaning into a more complex conceptual fabric." Over the decades Steir has been carrying on just the sort of A-list painting career that pulls in accolades like that, putting up installations of her paintings in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. This monograph contains complete biographical and bibliographical information, an essay and an extensive interview between Doris von Drathen and Steir.
