| | | Published by Charta. Artwork by Mark di Suvero.American sculptor Mark Di Suvero is famous for his monumental constructions of iron and steel, and his intimate pieces of weathered wood. Born in Shanghai in 1933 to Italian parents, he moved with his family to America in 1942. After studying philosophy and fine art at Berkley, Di Suvero moved to New York and gained the attention of the international art world after an exhibition at the Green Gallery in 1960. He left the US in protest of the Vietnam War, however, and settled in Venice, where he established himself as one of the world's most important living sculptors, represented in Biennials in 1975 and 1988. His work is presented through the lens of photographer Gianfranco Gorgoni, allowing for a most dramatic survey of Di Suvero's monumental installations amidst the stunning backdrop of Venice.
