Enzo Cucchi was a key member of the Italian transavanguardia movement in the eighties which was part of a larger neo-expressionist trend. This catalog celebrates the work of a man who is among the most recognizable Italian artists on the contemporary scene. Collected here are over 100 paintings and drawings from the late seventies to today and held in major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York, the Beaubourg in Paris, the Louisiana Museum for Moderne Kunst in Humlebæk, and the Stedelijk in Amsterdam (among many others). They offer a highly detailed overview of Cucchi from his official debut on the international art scene onwards, allowing an appreciation of the extraordinary variety and richness of his work.

With a palette that uses only elementary colors, and a subject matter sketched out in the barest terms, the work of Enzo Cucchi displays a primitive quality sometimes mistaken as naive. This volume, which documents both recent and now historical works, introduces to us his world--a place populated by eyes, legs and feet, wolves and books, envelopes, letters and desert scrolls.

Known in the early 80s as a protagonist of the NeoExpressionist movement Transavanguardia, visionary Italian artist Enzo Cucchi has recently embraced new subject matter--and with it a painting style characterized by new chromatic tonalities. This volume comprises a group of drawings and raw ceramic slabs embellished with symbolic characters relating to maritime subjects, particularly The Adriatic, defined by the artist as "the sea of painting."
