In 1973, Musabelle Naut opened Musabelle's Books on the corner of Memorial and Dairy Ashford, West Houston, back when the intersection was a four-way stop sign and the neighborhood was just budding. When Naut stepped down after 23 years, lifelong book lover and store volunteer Valerie Koehler stepped in, and together with her husband Greg, took over the shop, renaming it Blue Willow Bookshop. Always a family affair, Koehler convinced her father to help out in the store during the early years, and the rest of the staff was built around that ethos of hard work with an open heart. Today, Blue Willow Bookshop is run by a team of opinionated, well-read women. Its staff meetings are full of laughter, its back room is full of snacks, and the booksellers absolutely love putting the right book into their readers’ hands. They’ve got recommendations. They’ve got pizzazz. And they're always up for sharing!
