Per Kirkeby: Paintings 1978-1989, Catalogue Raisonné, Volume II
Edited by Ane Hejlskov Larsen.
Since the early 1960s, Danish painter Per Kirkeby (born 1938) has been recognized globally as one of Scandinavia’s most important contemporary artists. After a brief association with Fluxus, Kirkeby arrived in the late 1970s and early 1980s at the style for which he would become best known: a lush, gestural abstraction sensitively attuned to fluctuations in the natural world, informed by Nordic Romanticism and Kirkeby’s early training as a geologist. Edited by Ane Hejlskov Larsen, Per Kirkeby: Catalogue Raisonné, Volume II chronicles the painter’s breakthrough onto the international art scene in the period between 1978 and 1989. Featuring a complete catalog of Kirkeby’s paintings, “overpaintings” and blackboard works from this critical decade in the artist’s trajectory, this publication picks up where the first volume of the catalogue raisonné, focused on Kirkeby’s early years, left off.
