Text by Woody Allen, Ann Demeester, Jan Hoet. Interview by Luc Tuymans.
German Expressionism and New Objectivity shine forth in the paintings of Düsseldorf-based artist Kati Heck (born 1979). Her monumental paintings impress viewers with their humorous blend of styles, consisting of photorealistic figures together with graphic elements. Some sections of her collage-like works are meticulously painted in, while others are quickly executed. Like Robert Rauschenberg, Heck joins nontraditional materials and everyday objects to develop highly unusual pictorial creations. “She clearly, convincingly and permanently questions the art of painting,” said curator Jan Hoet of her oeuvre. This volume explores the painting of one of the liveliest emerging artists of the present.

I just found out about the paintings of Kati Heck and love what I've discovered. If you enjoy the scattershot surreal mind-mizzle of George Grosz or Neo Rauch, this is indeed your bag. Ann Demeester writes, "The storylines in her work are, from a narrative perspective, unapologetically promiscuous—like earthworms, they burrow on and multiply where they may. Whoever wants to unravel the beginning and the end in Heck's work will drown and disappear in an endless sea of meanings. Those who embrace its wondrous multiplicity can draw endlessly from this narrative ocean and, like a patient beachcomber, continue the search for those meanings that have washed ashore."
