Edited by Oliver Zybok. Text by Marcus Andrew Hurttig, Dieter Witasik, Oliver Zybok.
Yellowed, moldy pages are the support material for the multilayered collages of Martin Neumaier (born 1970), in which he carries out an intense examination of European colonialism and imperialism. Glued-on graphic elements dynamize the printing ink of the lettering and depictions and translate them into constructivist and abstract imagery. At second glance the works acquire an additional component and become superimpositions of different cultures. The books that Neumaier uses as the foundation for his works are textbooks and science books from the 18th–20th centuries, which undergo reinterpretation, adaptation and redefinition.
