In 2003, Mexican artist Iñaki Bonillas (born 1981) began to incorporate his grandfather’s photographic archive into his own work. "There is, in the act of inventing and deforming oneself before the camera (or through writing, for that matter), a playful component that, deep down, bares the autobiographer’s personality with more determination than a fatuously confessional image. But come to think of it, in photography, the only possible autobiographical genre is fiction: to prepare the camera, in solitude, for the shot, and to freeze one’s position before the lens, implies a production of the personality in which there is no place for the ingenuousness of the genuine. Yet even so, the result is genuine, disturbingly."
